Water sports.

Gordon's Bay offers a range of facilities for water sports. The beaches and warm waters of Gordon's Bay are ideal for pleasure cruises aboard Nimbus, sailing, parasailing, surfing, boating, fishing, water-skiing and windsurfing.

Beaches

Beaches in the Gordon's Bay area consist of Bikini beach, Sunset beach, Main beach, Kogel Bay and Melkbaai.

The cosy rock protected and long sheltered beaches of the Gordon's Bay area are a sun worshippers dream with soft white sands offering safe swimming, sunbathing and a multitude of water sports and activities. Perfect and safe for walking or to find your own private spot to relax.

Picturesque Main beach in Gordon's Bay is a favourite for swimming, sunbathing, beach games and water sports with paddle ski's and canoes for hire. Main beach is flanked by a promenade and lined with shops, restaurants and cafes. Safe for children when supervised.

Bikini beach is picture perfect in a cove next to the Old Harbour, and frequented by gorgeous bikini girls worshipping the sun and surfers alike. Swimming, sunbathing and meeting people.

Sunset beach, adjacent to Main beach is lined by protected Milkwood trees and features protruding rocks on the beach with a paved footpath underneath the Milkwood trees linking Main beach and the Old Village. Swimming, sunbathing and picnicking.


Gordon's Bay Main Beach

Melkbaai in adjacent Strand is a couple of kilometres of continuous white white white sand named after the Dutch name for milk. Mini golf, Go-karts and a waterslide. Good for walking, swimming in demarcated areas and sunbathing

Kogel Bay, some 10 minutes away on the coastal road towards Rooi Els must rate as one of the most scenic beaches in Africa. Swimming is dangerous but a surfer hotspot, and also a favourite picnic spot with barbeque facilities available. Excellent for long walks. A fee is payable at the vehicle entrance.

Beachfront parking with toilet and cloakroom facilities available at all the beaches.

Sun care.

The Gordon's Bay sun is yours to enjoy, therefore take the necessary precautions and appropriate sun block factor when sunbathing.

 

 
 
 
 

Surfing.

Surfing is a way of life along False Bay, adding a rich culture to Gordon's Bay and the beaches frequented by surfers. The surf culture embraces young and old, with a universal language and style of dress. Our scenic coastline has excellent surf spots for those with a burning desire to ride the perfect wave.
Talk to the locals frequenting the hot surfing spots of Bikini Beach and Kogel Bay.

Swimming.

The beaches in Gordon's Bay has the warmest temperature in False Bay and is considered safe for bathing. Kogel bay is the exception, only swim in areas demarcated and supervised by lifesavers.

Diving, Shark Diving and Snorkeling

Scuba Diving

 
 

The scenic coastline of Gordon's Bay offers excellent diving sites for novices and experienced divers alike, with winter and summer diving for snorkeling and scuba. A diving school for NAUI instructor courses is based opposite the Old Harbour. For NAUI diving courses such as open water one and hands on training contact Gordon's Bay Tourist Centre. Shark Cage Diving

Seal Island in False Bay is what its name says - a massive colony of breeding seals - the staple diet of sharks, and the most fearsome, the Great White, is all around. Do not do this on your own, go with the professionals. Leaving from the Old Harbour in Gordon's Bay. Contact Gordon's Bay Tourist Centre. Tel:+27 (0) 21- 856-5204.

Dyer Island some six kilometre offshore at Gansbaai, is a breeding colony for jackass penguins. Adjacent Geyser Island, where seals breed is separated by a narrow channel.
The islands teem with an abundance of sea life and is the feeding ground of the Great White shark. Shark safaris depart from Gordon's Bay. Be brave or stay at home.

Kogel Bay

Kogel Bay, some 10 minutes from Gordon's Bay towards Rooi Els must rate as one of the most scenic beaches in Africa. Swimming can be dangerous but the break is a favourite with surfers, and a favourite picnic spot with braai facilities available. Ideal for long leisurely walks, and if walking towards Gordon's Bay, you will find a large cave in the cliffs.
The Colebrooke, a British East Indiaman en route for Bombay with cargo of military supplies, copper and lead struck Anvil Rock of Cape Point on 25 August 1778 and was beached in the surf at Kogel Bay.
A fee is payable at the vehicle entrance or you can descend from the parking area to the beach.

Strand Indoor Swimming Pool.

Strand offers an Olympic size indoor public swimming pool to those who prefer fresh water swimming.
Beach Road, Strand.

Angling and Fishing
 
 

Rock Angling.

Gordon's Bay coastline attracts rock angling fishermen from all over the country, the sea's bounty includes Steenbras, Galjoen, Cob, Red Roman, Red Stumpnose and many more.

Closed season for:
Elf(Shad) 1 September to 30 November
Galjoen 15 October to 28 February
Red Steenbras 1 September to 30 November

Fishing.

Excellent and rewarding fishing from the Gordon's Bay coastline, the Old Harbour wall and the breakwater of the Gordon's Bay Waterfront. Fishing tackle,bait etc is available from the shop next to the slipway called Fish World. Tel. 856-3468
When the South-easter blows in summer the sea becomes "kob water" as it has done for hundreds of years for eager fisherman. Cape Salmon, Yellowtail, Snoek and Tuna are usually caught from boats and when the Snoek runs, everyone comes home with a good catch.
Chartered fishing trips depart from the Old Harbour of Gordon's Bay.

Fishing Charters.

1. Bottom fishing.

From the reefs and good fishing spots by boat, catches of "bankie vis" such as Red Roman, Steenbras and Cob.
