Helderberg wine route

Vergelegen Wine Estate.

Vergelegen, with its magnificent backdrop of the Hottentots Holland Mountains, is a must for all visitors. Granted to Governor Willem Adriaan van der Stel in 1700, and one of the Helderbergs most historic landmarks, the property and its buildings have been extensively restored. Visitors can admire the ancient Camphor Trees (declared national monuments in 1942), wander through the Octagonal and Rose Gardens and view the library.
There are guided tours to the Wine Cellar at 10:30, 11:30 and 14:30 Monday to Saturday. Built into the side of Rondekop Hill, the wine cellar also offers stunning views across False Bay to Table Mountain.
Bookings for tours are essential. Phone (021) 847 1348. After a tour of the cellar and a wine tasting, visitors may wish to visit the Gift Shop and Interpretive Centre, which details the historical importance of Vergelegen.
A walk through the superb Octagonal Garden and Homestead leads to the Lady Phillips Tea Garden where teas and lunches are served on a daily basis. Situated on the bank of the Lourens River and shaded by beautiful trees, the Tea Garden is open seven days a week. Reservations advisable on (021) 847 1346.
Al fresco lunches are also served at the Rose Terrace from November to April.
There is an entry fee to Vergelegen.
Vergelegen is open 7 days a week from 09:30 to 16:00.
